operated when installed in existing buildings, in buildings without commercial power, or in buildings which undergo alter- ation, repair, etc., and when such work does not involve the creation of additional units or is a change of occupancy. 2. In Grou R Division 1 occu ancies every dwelling unit within an apartment house, and every guest room designed or used for sleeping purposes within a hotel or motel, shall be equipped with an approved smoke detector. Detectors within apartment dwelling units shall be mounted an ceilings or walls in each unit at a point centrally located in the corridor or other area with access to the rooms used for sleeping purposes. In efficiency or studio apartments, and w~th~n hotel and motel guest units, the detectors shall be centrally located on the ceiling or wall. Detectors inside dwelling units or sleeping roams, if awall-mounted detector is used, shall not be less than six inches or more than l2 inches from the ceiling. Where dwelling units and sleeping rooms are on an upper level, additional detectors shall be placed at an accessible location as close as practical to the center of the ceiling directly above the stairways. The owner of each hotel or motel, or designee, shall inspect and service each detector every 12 months. A record shall be maintained for each detector listing the date installed, dates inspected, and dates serviced. This record shall be available for inspection by the fire marshal . The following shall ap ly p to smoke detectors w~th~n apartment house dweli~ng units: a. The building owner or designee shall post written instructions far the operation of the smoke detector within each dwelling unit. b. The tenant of each dwelling unit shall be responsible for periodically testing the unit's smoke detector. The building owner ar designee shall not be responsible if a tenant removes a battery from a detector. c. Upon failure of the detector, the tenant shall deliver a written notice of failure tv the building owner ar designee. d. The owner shall replace or repair the defective detector within ten CIO} days from the date of the notice. 3. ~n Group R,_ Division 3 occupancies every existing dwelling that ~s being rent~ed,~leased, or is otherwise being occupied for consideration, and each guest/sleeping room in a lodging house, shall be equipped with an approved detector. Detectors within qualifying buildings shall be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in each corridor or area giving access to rooms used far sleeping purposes.
