be provided far toxic gases when the physiological <br />warning properties for the gas are at a level below <br />the accepted permissible exposure limit for the gas. <br />The gas detection system shall be capable of monitoring the <br />roam or area in which the gas is stored at or below the per- <br />missible exposure limit ~PEL} or ceiling limit for, if appli- <br />cable, the Threshold Limit Value ~TLV}} and the discharge <br />from the treatment system at or below one-half the IDLH limit. <br />14. Smoke Detection. An approved supervised smoke detec- <br />tion system shall be provided in rooms or areas where highly <br />toxic compressed gases are stared indoors. Activation of the <br />detection system shat l sound a 1 ocal alarm. <br />11. Storage Cynd,itions. The number of cylinders contained <br />in a single gas cab~~net shall not exceed three. <br />EXCEPTION: Cabinets containing cylinders not exceed- <br />ing one ~1} pound net contents each shall be limited <br />to a maximum of 100 cylinders. <br />fib} Exterior Storage. <br />1. General. Exterior storage of highly toxic compressed <br />gases shall be in accordance with the provisions of this sub- <br />section and the general provisions specified in Section H4.301. <br />2. Distance from Stora a to Ex osures. In addition to <br />the provisions of the Structural Specialty Code, exterior <br />storage of highly toxic compressed gases shall comply with <br />the fol 1 owl ng: <br />A. Exterior stor- <br />~ stance L~ m~ tat. o_„_.,_ <br />age of highly toxic compressed gases shall not be per- <br />mitted within 75 feet of a building, property line, <br />street, alley, public way or exit tv a public way, unless <br />the storage is shielded by a structure having a minimum <br />fire-resistive rating of two hours and which interrupts <br />the line-of-sight between the storage and the exposure. <br />The protective structure shall be at 1 east five feet <br />from any exposure. The protective structure shall have <br />not more than two ~~} sides at approximately 94-degree <br />directions, except that a third diagonal section may be <br />used at the vertex. <br />B. 0 enin sin Ex osure Buildin s. When the storage <br />area is located closer than 75 feet to a building, open- <br />ings into a building other than piping shall not be per- <br />mitted above the height of the top of the shielding <br />structure yr within 5o feet horizontally from the storage <br />area whether or not shielded by a protective structure. <br />C. Air Intakes. The storage area shall not be per- <br />mitted within 15 feet of any air intakes. <br />3. Cana ies. <br />A. Portable tanks and cylinders stored outside of <br />buildings shall be stored under a canopy of noncombustible <br />construction. Such storage shall not be considered indoor <br />storage. <br />B. An automatic fire sprinkler system shall be pro- <br />vided for canopies provided for the storage of highly <br />toxic compressed gases. <br />Ordinance - 36 <br />
