DEVELOPMENT APPROACH (cont.)

These best possible outcomes are possible. They are probably already present, at some level, in
the environment. These outcomes affect relationships so that information exchange is facilitated,
and this fosters the best possible outcomes of an issue. They create the reactive force that
develops the new beliefs, behaviors, strategies and actions of the participants.

8. The Issues We Are Facing:
This task allowed each member of the team to express how they
view the present situation. A panel of 4 participant pairs spoke to each other, each also acting as
a listener. These panelists then managed one of 4 small groups, where all participants were able
to speak and answer the questions:

What are the issues in the present situation that need to be addressed?
How do you feel about them?

When all had spoken, each person recorded on a 3 x 5 card the answers to these questions:

What are two issues or concerns you heard from others that you agree with?
What is one or more issues or concerns that you expressed?

This assures that all were heard, and imprints the information in the minds of the listeners. This
information is developed into the collective statement in the report.

10.The Worst Possible Outcomes of Bringing the Cultures Together:
A key issue is the rift
between two cultures, the original “conservative” families and the new “progressive” families.
This has caused other rifts between the different segments of the community. The retreat
participants answered the question, recording directly to the small group flip charts.

What are the worst possible outcomes of bringing the cultures together?

These statements describe what we don’t want to happen. They will be instinctive, autonomic,
without thinking. This activity brings our fears into our consciousness. They are possible, and
if we are conscious of them, we can manage them differently.

11.
