er"P1C' ee flznAbook
Welcome to the City of Eugene! 0
We are delighted that you have chosen to become a member of our team and add your talents, energy, and
expertise to our workforce.
This organization and its staff are widely known for their excellence and commitment to high - quality, efficient services that are
responsive to the community's diverse and ever - changing needs.
As an organization we are guided by five fundamental core values of good government — democracy, professionalism, public
ethics, public service, and diversity.
• Democracy a deep commitment to our country's ongoing democratic experiment in self - governance, and a
solid respect for the tough duty of our elected representatives.
Feedback and input from both our citizens and employees are critical to the success of the City in its operations, policies, and
direction. Your involvement in this organization is greatly valued. I hope you will take advantage of every opportunity to
provide input or suggestions on the work we are doing.
• Professionalism –the value of the knowledge, skill, perspective, and experience that we as professionals
contribute to the dialogue of public life.
Every employee brings his or her own specialized knowledge, skill, expertise, and experience to this work. Our individual roles
as professionals should serve as a reliable resource for any action taken or decision made by the organization.
• Public Ethics - -the bedrock principle that we always must live up to the highest ethical standards in order to
gain and keep the public trust.
We must be vigilant in building and sustaining the trust placed in us by those we serve. As public employees, it is incumbent
on every one of us to maintain the highest ethical standards possible in the execution of our jobs and in our conduct as
citizens of this community.
• Public Service - -the desire to serve others and contribute to making our community better and the important
awareness that we work for our citizens.
As City employees, we answer to the citizens of this community and region. The services we provide and the health of our
community are a direct reflection of our competence, dependability, and commitment as public servants. I believe that to
provide the best possible value for our customers, our workforce must be knowledgeable, forward- thinking, and eager to
tackle the challenges we face.
• Diversity - -the understanding that each human being brings a wide variety of experience, cultural
backgrounds, and talents to their roles in an organization.
As an organization we must maximize the full potential of every employee through an acceptance of, and respect for, our
differences and similarities. It is important that the diversity of our employees mirrors that of the community we serve.
We hope you will join us in embracing these values and those outlined in your Employee Handbook as you begin your career
with the City of Eugene. Working together, we can make your employment experience both personally and professionally
rewarding. Welcome!
Revised May 2008
