All full time employees are expected to put in a full eight (8) or ten (10) hours on the job. This means
being on the job at the designated time and staying on the job until the end of the shift. Shift time's are designated
by the supervisor and may be changed as necessary to facilitate the work.
If you wish to work a different schedule, discuss your proposal with your supervisor. Requests for an alternative
work schedule may be approved if departmental operations and public service requirements are not adversely
affected. If you are a full -time employee on an alternative work schedule, you must still work 40 hours per week
and you will have specified times for beginning and leaving work. It may include an early or late starting and
quitting time, a 4 -day, 40 -hour work week, or other variations which meet individual and departmental needs.
Your alternative work schedule is subject to periodic review. If the arrangement is not operating efficiently, you will
be required to return to a normal work schedule.
Breaks and Meal Periods APPM 5.2.1 (Revised 01126107)
A 15- minute rest break is provided during each half shift (four hours on an 8 hour shift, or five hours on a 10 -hour
shift) approximately mid -way in the period. Breaks may not be added to the meal period. Neither breaks nor meal
periods may be taken at the beginning or end of the work period. Breaks may not be added to extend your meal
period, and you may not use your break time and meal period to come in late or leave early.
Employees are provided either thirty (30) minutes or one (1) hour for a meal period for any shift 6 hours or more in
length. This time is unpaid as long as an employee is relieved of all duties. if an employee performs any job duties
during the meal period, meal time is paid.
SEE: For more information about union - represented employees and work schedules, see the appropriate Labor
Agreement for Represented Employees.
Rest Period to Express Milk APPM 5.2.2 (Revised 01126107
An employee needing to express milk for her child 18 months of age or younger will be provided a 30 minute
unpaid rest period during each four hour work period, to be taken by the employee approximately in the middle of
the work period. The employee shall, if feasible, take the rest periods to express milk at the same time as the rest
periods or meal periods that are otherwise provided to the employee. To the extent that the break period needed to
express milk exceeds the employee's paid rest period, it is unpaid, although the supervisor may allow the
employee to work before or after her normal shift to make up the amount of time used during the unpaid rest
periods.
Unpaid rest periods used by the employee to express milk will be considered paid work time for the purpose of
determining an employee's contribution toward their health insurance premium.
The City is not required to provide rest periods to express milk if doing so would impose an undue hardship on City
operations. The employee should provide the supervisor of notice that employee intends to take rest periods to
express milk.
General Overtime Guidelines APPM Section 5.6
If you are a confidential (non- represented) employee and work in excess of 40 hours per work week, you will
receive overtime for all hours above 40 hours. You will be compensated in cash or compensatory time off at 1:1.5
times your regular rate of pay for overtime hours worked. You may elect to be compensated in cash or
compensatory time off.
If you are an exempt (non- represented) employee you are overtime exempt. You receive a fixed salary for all
hours worked and an additional Management Vacation benefit. If you are a full -time employee, this refers to any
work in excess of 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week. If you are a part -time employee, this refers to work in
excess of your scheduled part -time work hours.
The work week may begin at any particular time of the day and any day of the week. Work weeks for firefighters
and police may vary from this requirement.
Because union represented employees have additional provisions for the payment of overtime in their collective
bargaining contracts, the above minimum requirements of the law apply only to employees designated as
confidential exempt and temporary employees.
14
