You are expected to be familiar with general safety policy and departmental safety
procedures. You are also expected to use proper safety methods, practices and equipment
necessary for your job. Accidents, faulty equipment, unsafe practices and/or unsafe
conditions in your work area should be promptly reported to your supervisor. Accident
prevention is an important part of every employee's job.
Drug and Alcohol Policy
The City of Eugene is covered by the federal Drug Free Workplace Act and has adopted
the provisions of the Act, which include the following:
Reporting for work under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or use of alcohol or drugs
during working hours, is strictly prohibited. The unlawful manufacture, distribution,
dispensation or possession of any controlled substance is prohibited in the workplace.
The law requires that if you are convicted of violating any criminal drug law, you must
report the conviction to your supervisor within five days of the conviction. You may be
dismissed from employment for violation of any part of this policy.
In addition, temporary employees are covered by a City policy on the use of drugs and
alcohol. This policy can be found in the APPM.
Smoking Policy
The use of any lighted smoking instrument or device (cigarettes, cigars, and pipes) is
strictly prohibited in indoor work areas at all facilities owned, leased, and operated by the
City of Eugene, including all motorized vehicles and motorized equipment leased and
operated by the City of Eugene, unless expressly permitted by collective bargaining
agreement. Smoking will be allowed in designated outdoor patios, balconies, walkways,
and other outdoor areas as long as smoke does not infiltrate another work area.
This policy applies to all employees and members of the public when inside City -owned
or leased facilities and vehicles.
Weapons Policy
The City of Eugene is committed to providing a safe working environment for all City of
Eugene employees. In order to meet this goal, the City of Eugene prohibits employee
possession of any dangerous weapon, while on duty or at any other time while in a City
owned or controlled building, job site or vehicle. As defined in ORS 161.015, a
dangerous weapon means any weapon, device, instrument, material or substance which
under circumstances in which it is used, attempted to be used or threatened to be used, is
readily capable of causing death or serious physical injury, unless such possession is
authorized by the City in the performance of the employee's job duties. This policy takes
precedence over an employee's permit to carry a concealed weapon.
