Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
Please ban free single-use plastic bags! I used to live in Germany, where stores charged 10 cents
a (sturdy, reusable plastic) bag to people who forgot their cloth bags. It's easy to change habits
and remember to bring your reusable bags when you go shopping.

I'd also love to see the city selling sturdy, hip-looking cloth bags to consumers at cost. If you target
students, the rest may follow.

Thanks for listening!
If you want to discourage plastic bag use, just require that retailers charge a minimum fee like
they do in Europe. Folks who really want a bag can pay for it. Start low at five cents the first year,
then ramp up.
I'm in full support of a plastic bag ban. I hope Eugene can lead the state and the country in this
initiative.
I am not in favor of the city council telling businesses and people what to do in this case. Next it
will be what size soda they can sell, we do not need a "Nanny state". Incentivize businesses and
community members, don't issue "bans".
I think city government has more important and bigger things to deal with than telling us what we
can take home our groceries in. I use my grocery store plastic bags to either line my small trash
cans or to place dog doo in. If I can't get these at the grocery store anymore, then I will be forced
to purchase heavier and more expensive trash bags, which I believe are a greater harm to the
environment. I am reusing these bags.
Banning plastic bags will not help the environment. It will just put people out of business. I reuse
many of my plastic bags. They are a wonderful invention! This ban will just increase costs for
businesses and consumers.
I believe that this is a town heavily in need of tourists for the economy and that tourists do not
carry their own bags. This is not a good idea period.
I also reuse all my small plastic fruit/veg/bulk food and spice bags-wash and reuse!
Banning bags is stupid and will inconvenience people. What are people to use for garbage if a
damn ban takes effect? I double the bags both for bringing groceries home and for garbage.
It is a very slight habit adjustment to bring your own bags. Anyone is capable! Support a cleaner,
less wasteful environment and ban the flimsy plastc bags!
100% supportive of passing this ban, for our environment and future generations!
If we are successful in the plastic bag ban, we will be leading other cities in our state and the
nation. Please help Eugene be a leader in sustainability!
I think an incentive, like charging for paper bags, is more appropriate. Outlawing bags to get
people to behave the way you want borders on facsist.
plastic bags are too hard to recycle
We tend to a store's plastic bag once every 2 months. We have bags going back several years.
They tend to be used as trash bags, but as we use something like a the plastic bags inside of
cereal boxes as a bag within this bag, a grocery store bag lasts a couple of months as a trash
bag. This explains why we don't "recycle" plastic bags.
Please vote to ban plastic bags.
im tired of the 9 boobs on the city council telling me whats best for me. i buy my gas in springfield
and if they take away plastic bags then i will do all of my shjopping in springfield. do you ever
wonder why the big businesses all move to springfield???
if you ban plastic bags people will have to use paper or reusable bags. That would be great.
I can't afford to buy plastic bags to line my trashcans with or to use for other purposes.
