Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
This is precisely why people despise government. It tries to control every part of our lives -
lightbulbs, showerheads, water level in toilets, etc. etc. Why don't you figure out how to keep
people safe and the streets repaired or something else that's a legitimate governmental function?
That's what you're elected to do.
We also need an alternative to plastic produce bags. To encourage customers to bring their own
bags and containers from home, markets should charge for ALL plastic bags (not just the carry-
out kind with handles), or the city or state should tax each bag (I suggest 10 cents per bag). It
makes me sick to think of the billions of plastic bags thrown away every day, which are
accumulating in landfills and in our oceans.
Thanks for taking the time to hear from residents.
Retail outlets could charge customers for the use of plastic to encourage the use of reusable
bags.
Banning single use plastic carry-out bags is long overdue for Eugene.
Support banning carryout plastic, improving produce plastic recycling (presorting, for instance)
I truly hope the use of plastic is reduced, way too much of it floating and blowing around, and it
takes so long to disintergrate.
I support a local bag ban.
I am in favor of a ban on single use plastic bags. - even though they are useful in carrying wet
garbage and swimsuits. We can adapt, however!
Without plastic bags there will be a lot more dog poop in the parks and along sidewalks. Most
people will not buy commercial bags because of expense. Pitty the kids in the parks.
I think that this is a good idea to go plastic bag-less.
Unfortunately too many people are ignorant and careless in their recycling efforts.
Keeping reusable bags in your car can easily become a habit. Early on, I would leave my
groceries & go back to the car for my bags.
I can live without plastic grocery bags, however other smaller plastic bags are necessary for
produce, meat, and many other specialized uses. I would NOT support a ban that eliminated
paper bags.
reduce reuse recycle --should be started in grade school. People are to lazy. Just look the side of
the road , walking paths, garbage cans.
If a ban of the bags is not possible. Then pressure should placed on sanipac and other recycling
organizations to accept them in curbside pickups.
Except for one negative, plastic bags are better than paper bags. Plastic bags weigh less and
thus require less fuel and road wear to deliver to stores. Additionally, plastic bags require far less
fuel and water to make than paper bags. However, plastic bags are extremely dangerous for
animal life and is causing major problems for land and aquatic animals. That said, it is important
to realize banning plastic bags in the US may do little to help animals. Much is made of the the
hundreds if not thousands of tons of plastic in our our oceans. But before we ban the use of
plastic bags we should first question where that plastic is coming from. There are 300 million US
citizens and 2 billion people in Asia. If the majority of the plastic pollution is coming from Asia then
Eugene and other US cities will accomplish nothing but an increased demand for water and
energy by banning plastic bags and do very little to protect animal life. Before banning plastic
bags Eugene most determine how well it is doing at keeping plastic bags out of the ocean. If
Eugene is doing a good job of recycling plastic bags then Eugene will cause more environmental
damage by banning plastic bags.
Thanks for working towards banning plastic bags in Eugene. This is a good step for the
environment. People who aren't aware of the great pacific garbage patch in the ocean need to be
educated as to why our ways of convenience and discarding needs to end now.
