Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
Plastic bags don't take up much landfill space. There are probably more cost effective ways to
use our resources to get the most conservation bang for the buck.
I use the plastic bags as trash bags. It would create an additional expense in both buying trash
bags and reusable bags. It would influence me to drive to Springfield to shop.
Because of my age and disability I need my bag to be VERY light, and this means I generally
have about 8-10 bags/week. I cannot use paper because they fill them too full and cloth bags
have been proven to transfer bacteria from meats to anything else subsequently carried in that
bag. Please, NO BAN on plastic bags!!!
Only use plastic when I do not have my own bags with me and they do not offer paper (for
example, Target).
I 100% support a plastic bag ban in the city of Eugene.
Any time I hear a dumb idea such as this one, I picture someone setting in a room without
windows. They have nothing else to do so they come up with these useless ideas. I have
reuseable bags, but don't use them because it is so hard to keep them clean. Putting chicken or
fish in them is just asking for trouble.
I reuse the plastic, but it is flimsy and has holes so it is not good for most things. I think a ban or a
5 cent per bag fee is a good idea.
Imposing taxes and bans on products and services, in the city, will only drive consumers to shop
in local communities not affected by by this rule. This in turn will hamper small business profits
and make big businesses think twice about wanting to do business in the city limits.
I use them for my household trash.
For some people - young, elderly, disabled, people on bikes, etc. plastic bags are useful and in
some cases

necessary for carry items. And are we going to ban plastic garbage bags next?
The City of Eugene has more important things to worry about than whether or not plastic bags are
used to carry grocery and other purchases home in. Quit trying to legislate behavior and put your
energies into solving serious issues such as the increasing gang related violence, property
crimes, and budget cuts facing the citizens of Eugene.
Choices are needed for how I use my plastic bags. Do not ban plastic bags. Have the retailers
participate in education and recycling efforts. I'm fairly liberal, kind to the environment, but do not
like the continued encroachment of government determining our individual choices.
A ban on single use plastic bags is a not needed and is a waste of city of Eugene resourses. The
city can't balance its budget now. Why are we taking on another cause? It's nothing but a feel-
good proposal for those living in south Eugene. The city should concentrate on core services. Let
the market decide whether to use or not to use plastic bags.
I strongly support all levels of government legislating against plastic bags.
There is so much that needs to be done to protect our environment....water quality... global
warming... I'm not sure the energy invested in banning plastic bags is the best use of our human
resources. I say charge for them and people will stop using them.
It irritates me that I will be charged a fee for paper bags if this is initiated. The people who are the
exceptions always punish those of us who try to comply and do the right thing. I am sick of it!
The consumer and retailer survey do not address the consequences of too many plastic bags. A
good question would be: How concerned are you that plastic bags create an environmental
hazard. Or: How often do you find yourself with too many plastic bags?
I think that if the option of plastic bags are not available, them people will get used to bringing
bags. People at first don't like change and will whine but they'll get used to it. We need to rid of
these one use bags. Such a waste. Other countries get by without them and so can we.
Follow the European models. No personal bag, get charged up the whazoo for paper bags. Oh,
you want plastic bags? Double the price!
