Attachment D: Text responses from consumer plastic bag ban survey
For sanitary reasons, I love plastic bags. I'll probably purchase plastic bags and use them. The
reusable bags you can now purchase will be a huge landfill problem within 5 yrs. I'm already
seeing them abandoned here and there. And they're coated with dyes etc.
One problem I see is that retailers use the plastic bags as marketing, by using there logo on them.
With reusable bags they loose this. So now they sell reusable bags with the same logo's. Only
problem is we consumers don't care who's reusable bag it is, we just grab the ones we have.
What we need is a pre-sale or give away by the retailers, of their bags. If they are free they get
the free publicity, up front, because once everyone has enough bags there won't be the need for
more . We need a way to cover for those of us who may forget there bags. Maybe a slight charge
that could be offset if we returned the bag back to the retailer, clean and in good repair.
i think that banning plastic bags are one of many stupid ideas the city of eugene has come up with
I am old and have back problems. Plastic bags make it easier for me to carry my groceries in.
It's easy to use reusable bags for groceries, but I would strongly prefer plastic bags at other kinds
of stores. I can't imagine bringing reusable bags to the mall, for example.
I like WinCo's policy of taking 6 cents off the grocery bill for each bag you bring. Now there's
some incentive for these hard times!
It still amazes me how many people I see using plastic bags. I'm of the belief that as long as it's
voluntary, only a small percentage of people will make the effort.
Please ban plastic bags. We don't even need the small ones for produce. Lots of Eugenians wash
their plastic bags, even the little ones, and then use them over and over, which is good. But it
would be even better if we all decided to find alternative containers, such as washable cloth bags
of different sizes, to meet our containing/carrying needs. Baskets and reusable, durable bags are
better than plastic bags of any size.
Join with Springfield and ban them together!
I would prefer that they just be banned or have a hefty charge to persuade us to remember to
bring our own. I'd be more likely to remember after a few charges for forgetting them.
I vote for banning single use plastic bags!!!
There is no need for a new ordinance. The current situation is efficient and effective and does not
need changing.
I would support a ban on single use bags - it would encourage me to change my bad habits.
The big hullabaloo about banning single-use plastic bags is a substitute for some much more
substantial measures to provide a much larger volume of pollution reduction/recycling/reduction of
petroleum dependence. Those plastic bags are a minor amount of our petroleum waste.
If stores charge for paper bags and do not offer plastic, people will learn to remember their own
bags more. If there is no cost associated with using disposable plastic bags, we will continue to
use them.
I fully support the ban on plastic bags and see it as one of the only tools the city has to reduce the
use of them by consumers. Behavior change will occur once plastic bags are removed.
I'm pleased that the city is making progress towards banning plastic single-use carryout bags and
plastic single-use products, in general.
The city has no business restricting public use of any non-hazardous item. We have far too many
governmental restrictions on personal liberty as it is and the city and state need to refrain from
legislating every detail of our personal life.
I support the endeavor to cease the use of plastic bags in Eugene 100%. Please get the
community involved more in this campaign: We care too!
Great job tackling this issue!
If you ban I will not shop in Eugene again!! You will loose Local Business from my entire family &
neighbors! Keep that in mind!!
